Use. Fewer. Words.

In the great world of wisdom the common perception is “more words equals better”. The truth is far from this statement. If we are limited to 86,400 seconds in a day and YOLO, then why are you filling up the beautiful silence with words? … [pause here, and take a deep breath of silence] … The mindset of our culture is “more”. Stop it. Time is more valuable that words. Respect is given by attention. If you cannot say your point in 280 characters or less, than you’re not worthy of that person’s time. Remember now, I’m speaking in terms of your business clients, not your family and personal life. People who buy your product or service value their time.

Funny though…if it’s “their” time, aren’t they also using “your time”? This is the respect you have for yourself, or should. If you could take 5 minutes worth of talking and condense it into 90 seconds, both you and your client would save time. This practice has immense value when scaled to the full day and how many people you connect with on a daily or weekly basis. From My Sense, I have noticed that the more wealth someone has attained the less time they spend in frivolous conversation telling anyone about how their day has been. They have more important things to do than to get a false feeling of importance from blabing their day’s details (however exciting) on you or their clients. It’s irresponsible to take up the place of silence and serenity with rambling unnecessary words.

Social Media is the biggest cause to this epidemic. There is NO COMPARISON to the amount of noise and chatter that persists day after day. I’m honored that you would even read this far (but you probably skimmed through, looking for keywords. It’s okay…I do it too). MORE CONTENT, MORE VIDEOS, MORE ARTICLES, MORE PODCASTS, MORE, MORE, MORE! Take the value of this article that I’m writing directly to and for you. Take this and apply the art of using fewer words in your correspondence with your business acquaintances. I guarantee you will have a more productive week. If you wouldn’t give someone $1.00 per second to listen to what they’re telling you, stop. And more importantly if you wouldn’t give yourself $2.00 per second for the words you’re saying, then you should stop too.

Hypocrite! Andrew, how could you say “use fewer words” as an author!? As someone writing words or doing podcasts about not saying as many words, you’re directly countering your exact argument with words! Am I? No. This article is brief and this content is not talked about enough in our business circles. People from everywhere that have the “sales” personality and are great at talking to anyone, have this uncandid ability to “sell butter to corn by talking it’s ears off”. These types of people forget the beauty of respecting their own time and the time of their clients.

This week I implore you to find the value of people’s time by using fewer words and enjoying the extra silence that can come with that action. Who knows, you may have time for that phone call to an old friend. You know that one that you continually “can’t find the time for”? Well I just found it for you. Enjoy!
